How the calculator works

It starts from how common visible hair loss is at each age, then adjusts the odds for each of your answers. The figures come from large surveys and family studies. They describe groups of people, so read your result as a trend, not a verdict.

  • Age

The base rate. In men, the share with visible hair loss is roughly their age in percent: about 30% at 30 and 50% at 50. Women's hair thins later and less often: about 1 in 4 by 50.

  • Your father

Sons of balding fathers are more than twice as likely to go bald themselves.

  • Your mother's father

A key baldness gene sits on the X chromosome, which men get from their mother. A bald maternal grandfather raises the odds too.

  • Early signs

Receding temples, a thinning crown or a wider part mean it may have already started. They weigh the most.

  • Smoking

Studies link smoking to more advanced hair loss in men, probably through poorer blood flow to the roots.

What to do with your result

  • Low risk

Good news, but genes are no guarantee. If your hairline starts to move, compare photos taken a few months apart.

  • Medium risk

Take reference photos of your temples and crown now and check again every three months. Acting early keeps more hair.

  • High risk

See a dermatologist sooner rather than later: treatments like minoxidil and finasteride work best on the hair you still have.

This calculator gives a statistical estimate, for information only. It does not replace the advice of a doctor or dermatologist.

Whatever your odds, the real question is often: would it actually be that bad? bald-filter.com shows you bald live on your camera, for free and without uploading anything. Many people find the shaved look suits them better than they expected.

Frequently asked questions

Can you predict if you will go bald?

Not with certainty. Age and family history give good odds, and early signs like receding temples are the strongest clue. Genetic tests exist but only explain part of the risk.

If my father is bald, will I go bald?

Not necessarily, but your odds are higher: more than twice those of a man whose father kept his hair.

Do women go bald too?

Rarely completely, but about 1 in 4 women notices thinning by 50, mostly on top and along the part. Family history counts for them too.

Can I stop myself from going bald?

You cannot change your genes, but minoxidil and finasteride slow or stop pattern hair loss in most men who use them. They work best when started early, so talk to a doctor.

Is this calculator accurate?

It applies average figures from published studies to your answers. It is a good way to gauge your odds, not a diagnosis: only a dermatologist can examine your scalp.
