Would I look good bald? How to tell before you shave
A shaved head can look sharp, confident and effortless, or feel like a mistake you have to wait months to grow out. Whether it suits you comes down to a few things you can check in a mirror: the shape of your face, the shape of your skull, your facial hair and your style. Here is how to read them, then how to see the real result in one second.
1. Start with your face shape
Pull your hair back, look straight into a mirror and trace the outline of your face. Which shape is closest?
Oval
Balanced length and width, a gently rounded jaw. The easiest face to shave: almost every length works, from buzz cut to smooth.
Square
Wide forehead and a strong, angular jaw. Without hair the jaw takes center stage, for a bold, assertive look.
Round
Width and length are close, with a soft jaw. A shaved head can make the face look rounder: a short boxed beard or a goatee adds length and structure.
Long
Clearly longer than wide, often with a high forehead. A beard that is fuller on the sides adds width, and light stubble on the head is softer than a smooth skull.
Heart
Wide forehead, narrow chin. A beard fills out the lower face and balances the top of the head.
Diamond
Wide cheekbones, narrower forehead and jaw. The cheekbones stand out without hair; stubble or a beard softens the angles.
2. Check the shape of your skull
Hair hides the skull, which is where most surprises come from. Run your hand over your head: bumps, ridges, a flat back or a pointed crown all show once the hair is gone.
Small irregularities are normal and barely visible from the front. If the back of your head is very flat or you have a scar you would rather keep hidden, leave 3 to 6 mm of hair (a #1 or #2 clipper guard) instead of shaving smooth.
3. Facial hair changes everything
A beard is a shaved head's best friend. It moves the weight of the face downward, sharpens a soft jawline and keeps the look from feeling bare.
Clean-shaven works too, especially with an oval or square face, but it is a more striking look. If you hesitate, compare yourself bald with and without a few days of stubble before deciding.
4. Skin, ears, glasses and hairline
Skin tone
A scalp that has always been under hair is paler than the face for a few weeks. It evens out with daylight; wear sunscreen on your head meanwhile.
Ears
Prominent ears are more visible without hair. A beard and a few millimeters on the head make them less noticeable.
Glasses
Bold frames pair well with a shaved head: they add a strong line to the face. Very thin frames can look lost.
Receding hairline
If your hairline is receding or your crown is thinning, a shaved head usually looks younger and more deliberate than holding on to what is left.
5. The quick checklist
Count your yes answers:
- My face is oval, square or diamond-shaped
- My skull is fairly regular, without a very flat back
- I can grow a beard or at least stubble
- My hairline is receding or my hair is thinning
- I am fine with shaving every 2 to 3 days
- I like a minimal, low-maintenance style
The fastest answer: see yourself bald
Rules only go so far. bald-filter.com shows you bald live on your camera, with your own face, skull, light and movements, for free and without uploading anything. Turn your head, check your profile, try it with your glasses on: in one minute you will know.
Still unsure? A buzz cut of 3 to 6 mm is the reversible step: it shows the shape of your skull and grows back in a few weeks.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I would look good bald?
Check your face shape, the shape of your skull and whether you can grow a beard, then see yourself bald with a live filter. Oval, square and diamond faces with a fairly regular skull suit a shaved head best.
Which face shape looks best bald?
Oval and square faces are the easiest: balanced proportions and a strong jaw stand out without hair. Round and long faces also work, especially with a beard that adds structure.
Do I look better bald with a beard?
Most people do. A beard balances the face, defines the jaw and keeps a shaved head from looking bare. A few days of stubble is enough to see the difference.
Should I shave my head if my hair is thinning?
Often, yes: a fully shaved head usually looks more deliberate than thinning hair or a receding hairline. If you are not sure, start with a short buzz cut, which grows back quickly.
How long does hair take to grow back after shaving?
Hair grows about 1 to 1.5 cm (half an inch) a month. Expect 2 to 3 months to get back to a short haircut and around 6 months for a medium length.
